Because amazon already is the largest e-commerce website on the net, it can afford to take risks with it's almost half a trillion per year profit margin. Recently, amazon has announced plans to add "shopping for groceries online" to their list of services.
Although companies like stop and shop already have services like peapod, where you can get groceries delivered to your doorstep , amazon is better known and has a larger "global reach".
Soon people might no longer need to get out of their house to do their shopping. In the future, your food could be at your doorstep as easily as ordering batteries off Amazon.
